Can you imagine an early renaissance English church? A rare glimpse of the renaissance in Tudor England. These two funerary monuments are made from terracotta. If it hadn’t been for Henry VIII’s break with Rome, then terracotta ornament could have become fairly ubiquitous in English church architecture. For instance, they are used at Henley church in Suffolk as decorative window mullions and jambs. I recently found out, since I visited this church in the summer, that terracotta ornament in 16th century England can be trace to a few groups of Italian craftsman brought over by Henry VIII, who then returned to Italy due to the reformation. The different groups of terracotta craftsman can be identified by the particular ornamental patterns and forms: these ones here at Oxborough bare strong resemblance to those at Wymondham and Bracon Ash. Additionally, terracotta was used in several Tudor houses as well as funerary monument, with this dual use on show at Layer Marner in Essex. However, some of those craftsman stayed slightly long. I am sure their exodus from England was partly for religious reasons but primarily a matter of business. As the reformation meant church commissions were drying up in the 1530s and then in the 1540s, after the dissolution of the chantries in 1547, private gentry no longer had a rational to invest in elaborate monuments such as these, with the exception of a few bulwark recusants, such as the Bedingfleds of Oxborough.
