🤔 What keeps people sitting at the slot machines or returning to the roulette table, even though it’s all inherently designed to make people lose more than they gain? 🤯 The same psychological mechanisms that keep people engaged in an affair: 1️⃣ Operant conditioning: the variable ratio of reward: This relies on an unpredictable pattern of reward, is the most powerful and addictive reward pattern for the brain. The brain does not know when it’s going to get its next dopamine hit. 2️⃣ Behavior that is hard to extinguish: Because of the unpredictability of the reward, high persistence ensues because of the possibility of reward. The unpredictability creates extremely strong reinforcement, with behavioral patterns that are extremely hard to extinguish. 3️⃣ Losses disguised as a win: Even when there is no net change in the relationship, small crumbs of hope, possibility, and progress may be positioned to feel like just enough of a win to keep someone continuing. 4️⃣ The illusion of control: Enough information and positive reinforcement is given that it feels like there is some level of certainty and control, commensurate with the efforts and aid of those involved in the affair, to result in a desired outcome. This is an illusion. 5️⃣ Worse than gambling, with an affair, when someone gets up to walk away, the other person often drags them back into the relationship. It’s as if casinos had someone standing at every door to block it, telling you to promise them, just turn around and go back in.
