Stallone would have to relinquish all rights to the film if he accepted this amount. Stallone, willing to sacrifice everything, including his beloved dog, for his dream, declined the offer. He had one condition: he would play the lead role of Rocky himself. Initially, the producers were reluctant, but when Stallone refused to budge, they reluctantly agreed. Stallone would receive a salary of $35,000 for the film. He considered $15,000 of this money as "dirty" because it was used to buy back his dog Butkus. Director John G. Avildsen completed the film in 28 days. Avildsen had not watched a boxing match or a boxing film before filming. And Rocky's fate was sealed.
