“So how many clients do you have?” I remember getting asked this when I first started my business. My mind would race thinking through how I would answer... “Do I tell them I only have 1 and they’re only paying $75 an hour? Ugh, they’re going to think I’m such a loser…” “Should I lie and say I have 10? But what if they ask for details? And anyway, I’m not good at lying, I always lose track and forget what I said.” “Are the legs on the sofa tall enough that I can climb under it and die? I’d need a distraction so they don’t notice…” I’d ultimately settle on a deflective tactic, like… “Oh I just signed a new client (which was technically true), thanks for asking. Did you know that Giraffes clean their ears with their tongues? That’s gross right? What weird animal facts do you know?” When I went through my coach training program… the teachers all made it sound SO EASY to get clients. They recommended that we give away 30 minute sessions, and then ask people to sign up after. Which in theory, sounds pretty easy right? Only… I quickly learned that when you broadcast that you’re giving away your service for free, you attract freebie chasers, who will never buy from you. And you train the rest of the world that your services are free. I already felt like a massive failure- and getting asked this was just an ugly reminder that it wasn't working. It took several months of trying this before I realized I was ignoring my YEARS of sales and marketing experience, that taught me exactly how to get high paying clients. Without giving sh*t away for free. I created a simple strategy, and it started working almost immediately. My coaching friends started asking me about it, and I taught them, and they started signing clients. Then, I started getting referrals for clients who wanted to HIRE me to show them.
