1 week ago was my son’s first day of Kindergarten at the elementary school in our neighborhood. I waited to post this once my heart rate had settled enough I could write something of value- something that could maybe inspire dialogue between those of us going through this, and those who have gone through it before. . Why does starting kindergarten feels so big? It’s a little different for everyone isn’t it? For many of us there is an underlying theme. Kindergarten represents the next phase of life as a parent. When we truly face that our babies are individuals who need us to learn how to support them while encouraging independence on a whole new level. It’s also the beginning of something new & bigger… a new big school, bigger class sizes, new friends whose parents we’ve never met before, new day to day routines, new teachers who you don’t talk to at length during pickup about naps and social emotional interactions. . For me personally, my biggest anxiety about starting kindergarten resides in being a part of public school where in our district, kindergarten is M-F 8-3pm. I’m a PTSHM… part time stay at home mom. I’m self-employed and by the time I had kids, my business was well established and financially sound. This along with the support of my partner’s job security, gave me a lot of flexibility professionally in motherhood. I’ve had the choice to spend a lot of weekday time with my kids. Doing so was what felt right for me, and has been a privilege I haven’t taken for granted. I’ve cherished it, and it’s all my kids and I have known in life together. And now I can’t help but feel like someone is telling me I can’t have that time with them, and I find that gut wrenching. I’m still navigating my emotions around this. I’ve even googled “state law kindergarten attendance”. And yea, I do think about “unschooling”. I also am excited to see my son thrive (hopefully) in this new environment. I have a lot to explore, learn, experience, and reflect on.
