The House approved legislation Tuesday that would ban transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports at schools that receive federal funding. The 218–206 vote fell largely along party lines, with two Democrats — Reps. Henry Cuellar (TX) and Vicente Gonzalez (TX) — joining all voting Republicans in favor. Rep. Don Davis (D-NC) voted “present.” The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act would change federal law to require that “sex shall be recognized solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth” for the purpose of determining compliance with Title IX in athletics. Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities that receive federal funds. Transgender rights have become a political flashpoint in recent years, and President-elect Trump leaned into the issue during the 2024 campaign. His most effective campaign ad featured the line: “Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you.” Republicans have argued that transgender women have a physical edge over biological women, giving them an unfair advantage and limiting opportunities for others. “This is a great day for women in America. House Republicans have yet again stood up for women,” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said in a post-vote news conference. “We know from scripture and from nature that men are men and women are women and men cannot become women. It’s sad that we have to say that.” Democrats say policies restricting transgender athletes lead to further discrimination, particular for young people, and questioned why Republicans were focusing on this issue as one of their first orders of business. “There are 10 transgender college athletes out of the 510,000 who participate in intercollegiate athletics today, so this is just a very narrow issue to focus on in your second week of Congress,” Rep. Esta es MI HISTORIA y la de muchos otros creadores / filmmakers que empezamos con la ilusión de tener un canal de Youtube y vivir de ello cuando éramos más niños. Yo no descubrí mi pasión por el audiovisual gracias a encontrarme una cámara analógica en el desván de mi abuelo, ni porque desde pequeño tuviese un gusto especial por el arte o las imágenes. Mi primer contacto con el mundo audiovisual y con querer contar cosas a través de vídeos fue viendo un vídeo de @VEGETTA777 en Youtube con 12 años. Queda menos romántico que los otros ejemplos que puse, pero así fue y hay que ser honesto a cómo uno empezó su camino. Cuando empecé a subir contenido a Tiktok ni siquiera me imaginaba el impacto que iba a tener eso en mi vida, ni los beneficios que me había aportado el estar años subiendo vídeos a YouTube con 14-15 años, aprendiendo a hablar mejor a cámara, a editar vídeos... Pero al final todo en la vida acaba teniendo un fruto aunque a lo mejor en un corto plazo no le estés viendo el beneficio inmediato.
