Is this the face of Scotland's vilest ever character? I've written about the Wolf of Badenoch before, but I get a wee thrill every time I come face to face with him, so it's worth telling a little of his story again! He was born in 1343 as Alexander Stewart, a younger son of the man who would become King Robert II. The nickname Wolf of Badenoch didn't come around until long after he was dead. During life, he was referred to as Alisdair Mòr mac an Righ - Big/Great Alexander, son of the King! I'll let you decide which title he deserved more. Alexander was made Lord of Badenoch, Earl of Buchan and Justiciar of the North, in charge of dispensing justice and keeping the peace in the name of the crown. He did so with the help of bands of warriors, meeting force with even greater force. Some might say it was his only option. Others would argue he was just a violent man! Alexander married Euphemia of Ross in 1382, gaining control over huge swathes of land, but this wasn't a union of love. He refused to leave his mistress, who had already provided him with plenty of children, and when his marriage to Euphemia provided no heirs, things soured. The Bishop of Moray had a problem with Alexander's methods, so an ultimatum was delivered - return to your wife or be divorced and lose all that new land. Around 6 months later, Alexander lashed out at the Bishop, burning down Elgin cathedral, Pluscarden Abbey and the town of Forres! It's no surprise that he found himself divorced, excommunicated and known forever as the Wolf of Badenoch for his actions. He was no impetuous youth at the time, but 47 years old! After a grovelling apology, he was accepted back into the church, but such evil actions weren't forgotten by all. It's said that he died after gambling his soul on a chess match with the Devil in his castle where Ruthven Barracks now stands. He was laid to rest in Dunkeld Cathedral, where you can still find his effigy, staring out of its formidable armour with intricate carved buckles. It's a little worse for wear, but remarkable considering Scotland has very few contemporary tombs left. After all his brutal actions, the Wolf of Badenoch is the last one standing! #Scotland
